York RUFC's victory hopes dashed by Heath

HOPES of Yorkshire One victory for York Rugby Union Club were dashed in a bewildering five-minute spell before half-time.

The York ranks were leading their Heath visitors 7-5 thanks to an Alex Nixon try goaled by Paul Williams, but the Clifton Park crew lost focus and were punished by conceding two tries, one of which was converted, and a penalty.

That effectively nudged Heath out of reach despite a fighting second-half from York in which Nixon surged 50 metres for his second try and a driving maul secured another touchdown.

Arguably the best result of the top-flight was Malton & Norton’s 20-14 dumping of hosts Dinnington, but it did not allow The Gannock ranks to draw closer to Selby, who also posted an impressive away triumph by 24-21 over Skipton.

In Yorkshire Two, below-par Pocklington lost 26-3 at Ripon.

They started brightly but gradually lost their way and Ripon made the most of their chances to run out comfortable winners.

The opening quarter saw both sides frequently penalised at the breakdown and both kicked a penalty – Pocklington’s from Nick Bennett.

But Pocklington then gifted Ripon the first try and the hosts never looked back.

The odd Pocklington foray broke down through dropped passes.

The progress of Yorkshire Four leaders York Railway Institute was quelled by a surprise 27-20 reverse at Leeds Medics and Dentists.
